4 Presents you weren't expecting at Harborside

We have all heard the meaning of Christmas, and I think we can all agree what it's about, presents! If you ask someone what they like most about Christmas, more times than not, you will hear them say, "Presents!"  Who doesn't love presents?

You may be nodding in agreement with me right now, or you may be ready to shut off your computer in anger.  Whichever way you feel, hear me out.  Christmas is really about presents, but not just any present.  Christmas is about the present of God's Presence, Immanuel!

In the middle school we are spending four weeks going over the present of God's presence.  The true gift that we celebrate is found in the Bible.  God always wanted us to be in His presence, but something happened back in Genesis that separated humanity from God.  First God was with them, but was forced away from them.  We were separated from God's presence.

That was not the end of the story though.  God really loved us so he was prepared to do anything to be close to us, including stepping down from heaven to suffer here on earth.  Matthew 1:23 states, "Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, (which means ‘God is with us.)"  God was away from us, but now God is with us!

The true meaning of Christmas comes down to a present.  A present of God's presence, Immanuel.  During the next four weeks we will look at how in the presence of God, other presents are found.  Isaiah 9:6 says, "For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace."  Through this we realize these four presents:1. The Gift of Guidance2. The Gift of Strength3. The Gift of Security4. The Gift of Peace

Take some time during this Christmas season to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas, presents.  But not just any presents, the presents found in God's Presence!
