ROVING REPORTER BEAT: “GOD IN ACTION”
COLUMN ONE: JULY 14, 2013
It is an ordinary Sunday at Harborside.
Or, is it?
By all accounts, the walk through the parking lot toward the doors of church is nothing unusual. It’s a lovely summer morning and people smile and greet one another as they always do, but that is the norm at Harborside. People welcome one another; people feel welcomed. It is a family-friendly place. (This is not breaking news but is certainly deserves a headline.)
But … once inside the lobby, there is definitely something different. What is that in the southeast corner of the lobby? It looks like some kind of newsstand. In church?
On closer inspection there is a sign across the top of the stand that reads “NEWSPAPER.” It IS a newsstand! But why? And, who is that inside the newsstand? Someone in a cape and boots … no, it’s two people in capes and boots! Real Superheroes in the Harborside Christian Church lobby!
Children converge on the Superheroes, anxious for hugs and photo opportunities. The Superheroes are happy to oblige! The children immediately see Superhero rubber duckies everywhere! And, just as incredible are the dozens of vintage comic books showcased in the newsstand: Hulk, Spiderman, Superman, The Fantastic Four, Ironman, Wolverine, Black Widow, Captain America, and many more.
Is this a dream?
Grown men become little boys again as they gaze at the Superheroes of their youth.
Girls and boys chose their favorite rubber duckie Superhero and find that the $1 cost of the duck will benefit the mission of Vacation Bible School: Sunshine Christian Homes. Wow, this little 6-year-old just helped an elderly person in a Christian assisted living facility! What is going on here?
This Roving Reporter’s assignment is to report the facts. And the facts are: Here at Harborside, “God is in Action.”
There are several opportunities to join GOD IN ACTION:
· Parents of incoming kindergarteners to incoming 5th graders: Register your child to participate in “GOD IN ACTION,” Aug. 5-9. Go to www.HarborsideChurch.org/Children to register. Their mornings will begin at 9 a.m. with opportunities to meet new friends and connect with leaders. They will then hear the “Big God Story” and continue through the day with activities, crafts, games and snacks that further delve into the story of the day. Before the children are dismissed at 12:30 p.m., they will participate in a life-application drama so they will learn how the Big God Story can be applied to their lives at school, at home, at sports, and in life. Surfside Kids would love to have you, as a parent, to participate in leading our children to a growing relationship with Jesus Christ. Register to volunteer at http://www.harborsidechurch.org/children
· Parents of preschooler’s: You are not forgotten! Parents of little ones who want to volunteer at VBS will have superior care for their preschoolers at no charge! The little ones will get to participate in VBS at their level. Register to volunteer at http://www.harborsidechurch.org/children
